Chocolate Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie

Yes, this is as nice as it sounds and it still packs a nutritional punch!

This smoothie probably makes up half of my bloodstream at the moment because I’ve been having this one a lot recently. Over the months, I’ve perfected the chocolatey-ness of this one and added in some other good things your body will love you for:

  • Bananas: great for energy in the mornings, and together with the oats provide nice slow release energy.
  • Protein: if you add your scoop of protein powder, you’re also getting in your protein but you’ll still get some from the peanut butter and seeds even if you don’t choose to add it.
  • Greens: You get a second of your five a day with the handful of spinach (and I promise you can’t taste it because of the chocolate)! If you’re a spinach-in-smoothies newbie, start off with just a small amount.
  • Cacao powder: a superfood for a reason; it’s much less processed that normal cocoa powder and offers antioxidants and iron. It even contains tryptophan, an amino acid which is used to make serotonin in our bodies – a chemical in our brains that helps us relax.

I don’t need anymore good reasons to have a bit of chocolate in the mornings! Enjoy!

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 2 tbsp oats
  • 1 tbsp flaxseed
  • 1 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp natural peanut butter
  • 100 ml milk of your choice (approx.)

Optional

  • 1 medjool date
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder

Instructions

  • Place all the ingredients into the blender, putting the banana in last.
  • Blend until smooth. Poor into your favourite glass, add a reusable straw and enjoy!

Variation 1 - Banana peanut butter

  • Use all the ingredients excluding the cacao powder. If using the protein powder, swap to vanilla or unflavoured. Note, because of the spinach it will go a beautiful green colour! Blend as above.

Variation 1 - No spinach

  • I know greens in your smoothies, isn’t for everyone so you can always leave this out. Otherwise start in small quantities, and in a smoothie like this it’s hard to taste because of all the other yumminess! Blend as above.

Notes

Check out the variations at the end if you’re not such a chocolate fan first thing in the morning!
